Ohashi breaks world record in 200m breaststroke

History was made at the Asian Games in Japan on Thursday as Japanese swimmer Shin Ohashi shattered the world record in the men’s 200m breaststroke by more than half a second to claim gold. The 17-year-old Japanese swimmer touched the wall in a remarkable two minutes 4.83 seconds, finishing almost four seconds ahead of silver medallist Denis Petrashov of Kyrgyzstan. The previous world record of two minutes 5.48 seconds was written by the national team’s Qin Haiyang at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka. Adam Mak of Hong Kong, China narrowly missed out on a place on the podium, finishing just one-hundredth of a second behind South Korea’s Cho Sung-jae, who took the bronze. HWASEONG, Gyeonggi Province — Hwaseong, a rapidly developing city southwest of Seoul, has become one of Korea’s major destinations for foreign residents, particularly migrant workers.
