Jury dismissed in Abby Choi murder trial

A jury in the trial of three men accused of murdering celebrity Abby Choi was discharged on Monday after one juror applied to withdraw for health reasons, forcing the proceeding to be adjourned until Wednesday for a fresh jury to be selected. Deputy High Court Judge Brian Keith said one of the nine jurors wrote to the court last week citing health concerns, fearing that stress from the trial could aggravate their condition. The judge said the court considered two options — one was to let the remaining eight jurors continue, but he rejected that because the trial had not yet entered the prosecution's opening statement and the evidence phase. A direct replacement, as the other option, is not allowed by law, as all jurors must be selected from the same pool of candidates, he added. The jury of seven men and two women was chosen last Thursday. The three defendants are Abby Choi's ex-husband Kwong Kong-chi, her former brother-in-law Kwong Kong-kit, and her former father-in-law Kwong Kau. They are charged with murdering Choi on February 21, 2023 at Lung Mei Village in Tai Po, and with preventing the lawful burial of her body. Edited by Tony Sabine

President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating rose for the second consecutive week last week to 37.9 percent, a pollster said Monday.
