The Education Bureau on Wednesday said having five Hong Kong universities make it to the global top 100 again in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 demonstrated the strength of the city’s higher education system, and its world-class standards in teaching, research and international outlook. The institutions which made the top 100 in the Times ranking are the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University, the University of Science and Technology, City University (CityU) and Polytechnic University (PolyU). In a statement, a spokesperson noted the result also showed that the government’s efforts over the years had laid a solid foundation for the city’s higher education sector. “The long-standing high rankings of Hong Kong's universities at the forefront of international rankings not only reflect the achievements of the local higher education sector in striving for excellence and scaling new heights,” it said. “It also bears witness to the government's proactive leadership in guiding the post-secondary education sector to achieve outstanding results through policy measures such as seeking innovation and change, and expanding capacity while enhancing quality.” Looking ahead, the spokesperson said the SAR’s education sector was “ushering in a golden period of development full of promising potential” under the implementation of Hong Kong’s inaugural five...

A Kazakhstani worker died Tuesday after part of a concrete ceiling collapsed on him at an apartment construction site in southern Seoul, authorities said. (AMD), is expected to visit Korea next month to meet with Korean semiconductor companies and government officials, industry sources said Wednesday. The visit would come about seven months after her previous trip to Korea in March. According to government and semiconductor industry sources, a meeting attended by Su is being considered for Oct. 8 in Seoul. The meeting is expected to include the CEOs of major Korean artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor companies, including Rebellions Inc., FuriosaAI and Mobilint. Su is also expected to meet with Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon around the time of the meeting, the sources said. Less than half of South Koreans believe unifying the divided Koreas is necessary, a poll showed Wednesday, marking the second consecutive year that those in favor of unification fell short of 50 percent. The United Nations Command (UNC) said Wednesday it found a violation of the Armistice Agreement has occurred over last week's mine blast inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). "Based on the findings of the investigation, UNC determined that an Armistice Agreement violation occurred. UNC is addressing the violation through established Armistice mechanisms," it said in an emailed statement. Korea's antitrust watchdog said Wednesday it has begun deliberations on allegations Korean Air Lines Co. failed to meet seat capacity requirements imposed as conditions for its takeover of Asiana Airlines Inc. The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said its examiner's report recommended taking actions against Korean Air, its affiliate Jin Air and Asiana Airlines for providing fewer than 90 percent of the seats offered in 2019 on routes connecting the central city of Cheongju and the southern resort island of Jeju between December 2024 and December 2025. Under the merger conditions, the watchdog required the airlines to maintain seat capacity on designated routes at no less than 90 percent of corresponding 2019 levels. The report found the airlines had violated the FTC's requirements and recommended imposing penalties for noncompliance and referring the case for criminal investigation.
