Tung public service hailed as condolence books open

Condolence books were opened up across the city on Friday for people to pay their respects to Hong Kong's first chief executive, Tung Chee-hwa, who passed away on September 8 at the age of 89. At one of the condolence points, Moreton Terrace Activities Centre in Causeway Bay, a photograph of Tung was placed at the centre of an auditorium, framed by white flowers. Residents turned up to sign the condolence book. One man, Poon, came from Chai Wan to pay tribute to Tung, praising the late city leader for his kind character and noting that he had a very hard time in office. Another man, So, said Tung was wholehearted in his dedication to serving Hong Kong and making contributions. "Today is the first day of mourning for chief executive Tung," So said. "As a Hong Kong resident, I wanted to express my gratitude to him. "In my condolence message, I wrote: 'Chief Executive Tung, your selfless dedication throughout your life enabled Hong Kong people to transition smoothly. You will always be remembered."
