The MBA program at College of Charleston has a reputation for facilitating networking opportunities with key individuals at major companies. In 2017, under the leadership and direction of Shafi Keisler, nearly half of the class joined forces to create an MBA Task Force. The student led initiative focused on helping companies improve processes and facilitated projects including:

1) Improving and optimizing internal communications at Robert Bosch, LLC.
2) Revamping the cafeteria layout at Mercedes-Bens Vans, LLC for a four-fold increase in workforce.
3) Performed financial analysis and proforma P&L and Balance sheets for a wine and spirits firm to acquire two additional locations.
4) Determined the strategy for a local marketing firm to grow its niche product line.
5) Performed market research and strategy development for an international personal effects shipping company NowShip to create the collegiate marketing campaign.

The official founder, Shafi Keisler, leveraged his extensive background in engineering, finance, manufacturing, and STEM industries to help College of Charleston build relations with local businesses. Shafi utilized his relationships with MBA mentors Rick Self of Vistage, a CEO advisory board, and Robert Kosian of The Capital Solutions Group to introduce the MBA Task Force to potential clients. Additionally, Shafi attended the 1st Annual German-American Summit in February 2017 to inform the participants of the Task Force. The outreach resulted in the five projects mentioned above. Aside from creating inroads for many of the students in the School of Business, the Task Force allowed companies to solve many problems in a cost-effective way.

Shafi commented about his position of power and influence within the members, "The MBA Task Force is a collaboration among members with very different backgrounds, interests, and career paths. I was in a position of no authority or power; only influence for team work and the pursuit of excellence by all. This challenge was magnified by the fact the College of Charleston MBA program is a highly accelerated one, compressing 36 credit-hours over three semesters plus an international immersion working trip in Europe over the period of 11 months."

A strength of the Task Force was the diverse backgrounds it brought together. Together, the members had an average of 7 years of industry experience in finance, journalism, government, healthcare, finance, sales, marketing, and STEM industries. Fall semester of 2016 paved the road for the success that the group enjoyed in 2017. This timing was fortuitous for everyone involved because team members could immediately utilize the knowledge gained from courses in finance, operations, accounting, marketing, and leadership, and apply them to solving problems for small, medium, and large organizations.

Keisler paired team members together strategically by ensuring that both senior and younger members collaborated on projects. A project template was developed to facilitate project management, specifications, schedule, cost, team leader, and to establish expectations between client and team. This approach accelerated learning and improved the chance for success for every member. With Shafi Keisler's guidance, the Task Force created an environment where all students, College of Charleston's School of Business, and participating companies could all benefit from mutual involvement.

For the efforts and results of his initiative, Shafi Keisler was honored at graduation with 2016/2017 Outstanding Student of the Year Award from the School of Business. “Receiving this award, along with graduating with distinction Summa Cum Laude was a high point in my career, and life’s journey. Going back to school full time at age 48 is no easy task. I feel I have set a good example for my girls ages 12 and 10, and hope to be an inspiration for others to ‘sharpen the saw’ mid-career.”
