David Mai, event organiser, announced today that the Australian Discus Show has reached capacity for Discus judging contestant entries, with all tanks now full. Almost 100 Discus tanks are to be judged in Sydney this weekend the 18th and 19th of November 2023, located at The Pet Show 2023 at the Sydney Showgrounds in Olympic Park.

"We have a diverse variety of breeders attending the show including a lot of Australian fish, which is a pretty good result as we don't tend to have big competitions like this here, they are all in South-East Asia," said David Mai.

"This is a great event for Australia, the first in two decades, as it shows the growing popularity of breeding and pet ownership for the Discus fish."

The competition fish are judged on such attributes as their shape, patterns, and vibrancy of colours. There are eight categories of Discus, with the grand champion Discus owner being awarded $1000.

People keep these as pets for large aquariums and are an unusually round fish originally from the Amazon River, known as a difficult yet rewarding pet fish to keep. In recent years due to diligent aquariums and breeders, there has been a much-improved selection of these pet fish in the market. One of these aquariums, responsible for importing over 20,000 Discus in the last five years, is owned and operated by Kelvin Chang.

Kelvin Chang of OZ Discus and major sponsor of the Australian Discus Show, has also been responsible in developing a unique voting system by which the public can vote for their favourite three Discus by QR code. "This system is quite unique, as we can now have any show-goer help in the selection of the winner fish, alongside the prestigious international judges that are present. The prize you may receive for voting, could be a Cade Aquarium and supplies to get started with Discus keeping. It is valued at over $8000, and the prize is drawn on Sunday at the Show."

Korea's spy agency has detected more than 100 cases of industrial technology leaks overseas over the past five years, with semiconductors accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total, data showed Sunday.
