A local, sustainable pig farm in Spooner, WI, Chickadee Hills Homestead is reaching out to the community to share their farming philosophy of biodiversity and a healthier, tastier pork product: healthy soil, healthy life.

Although the farm has been raising pork since 2014, the farmers continue to extend their reach to conscious consumers who are seeking locally-sourced food that is raised ethically and in harmony with nature. Among Chickadee Hills’ customers are whole hog and farm-to-fork chefs and home cooks who are concerned with the nutrition of their food and eating local.

Owner Sherry Sutton Zarnado developed Chickadee Hills Homestead as a result of her passion for nutritious, home-grown food and due to her belief that by living on a farm she could make decisions she believes are good for not only herself but for her neighbors.

“Either your farm is getting better or it’s getting worse; everything you do on your farm impacts soil quality, water quality and your own health and the health of your animals,” said Zarnado.

“At Chickadee Hills, we use no herbicide, pesticide, GMO or synthetic fertilizer, and the result is a delicious, healthy, humanely-raised pork that you want to share with your family.”

Zarnado also grows the majority of the food consumed by her animals with the goal of developing a viable reproducible way to use the land for food production while preserving the environment.

The Spooner farm raises heritage breed Mangalitsa pigs, which is a red meat lard breed of hog from Hungary known as the “Kobe beef of pork” and “olive oil on legs.” Several chefs like Chickadee Hills’ pork so much that it’s often featured on local menus at Pine Brook Farm(Spooner), The Informalist (Eau Claire), Farm Table Restaurant(Amery), and Five Course Catering(Spooner).

What started as three pigs in 2014, has grown to a passel of 75 hogs. However, Zarnado states she will not exceed the capacity that her farm land can handle.

“Sherry and Matt are transforming this land into an amazing home for themselves and their flock,” said Joan Williamson, a friend of the farm, “Chickadee Hills Homestead is a special place where nature is respected, good husbandry is paramount and resources are carefully managed and conserved.”
