Jhanay Williams, founder of Braids & Jade, who has lived in China and France, stated: “The concept of Braids & Jade originated during my frequent travels throughout Asia. As a black female traveler and former expatriate, I’ve frequently entered spaces that weren’t curated to my needs. I wanted to find a community of people who looked like me and had the same interests, from light-hearted dialogue such as finding black hair products in Shanghai, to asking tough questions, like racism towards black tourists within different cities.”

The launch of Braids & Jade is part of a new travel mega-trend that’s grown in the past few years. Excessive personal questions and interference from relatives have been named the most unwanted aspect of the Chuseok holiday this year.
