The Baton Rouge Jewish Film Festival will open on January 10, 2018 at 7:00 PM with a showing of the Israeli film “The Women’s Balcony” at the Manship Theatre in downtown Baton Rouge. The Baton Rouge Jewish Film Festival is an annual Jewish film festival that is held in the heart of Baton Rouge, Louisiana each year in association with the Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge. Each year, it shows a number of Jewish films to great acclaim.
On opening night The Women’s Balcony will be shown, so that fans can enjoy Emil Ben-Shimon’s delightful Israeli dramedy. The film begins with a crash: a synagogue’s balcony, to which women are relegated, gives way during a bar mitzvah. From there, the congregation’s happy little world is turned upside down.
The New York Times said Emil Ben-Simon’s smart direction and Shlomit Nehama’s lighthearted and topical script ensure the proceedings not only hit all the right notes, but also entertain while being respectful of religious traditions. The entire cast is solid, but the women, especially Ms. Hagoel, bring depth to their comedic and dramatic turns.
